Yet another unplanned chase. It had been apparent for several days a severe weather outbreak would be likely today, but it would most likely be in areas of TX, LA and AR. Warm moist air had been in place over OK, but the system would move through to early to give most of OK a good dose of severe weather. Storms did develop early in the morning along the dry line taking the form of a squall line. I woke up just before the storms hit Norman and decided to run out and get a paper before they got here. I was a little to slow. As I returned home, the storms hit with torrential rain, pea size hail and 60mph winds, rocking my car quite a bit. This was more than I expected, so I decided to follow them east for awhile. I actually could see a small wall cloud through the rain to my southeast. However, the storms were moving quite fast and with extensive street flooding around, I decided not to pursue them any further than east Norman. My shortest chase ever, only 7 miles! There was indeed a severe weather outbreak, with 4 tornadoes in eastern Ok including an F2 near Vinita, and 13 tornadoes in Texas which killed 10 people. Four of these tornadoes were F3 in strength. Other tornadoes occurred in Louisiana near Shreveport killing 1. 50 tornadoes were reported over a three day period, with 11 total deaths across the southeastern US.
